You have a very slow flow with glaciers like the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska. This picture really shows the curving downward flow of the ice.
Once the ice reaches open water, pieces fall off and flow away more quickly:

We did an Alaska Inner Passage cruise out of Seattle. It is a very worthwhile vacation.
