When you want some pictures of interesting bare ground, the best place to go is Yellowstone National Park. The featured image is of the ‘Fountain Paint Pot’ were mud is king and hot steam is normal.
Nearby is a desolate landscape where life holds on by a slim thread:
Of course, moving around in this landscape required the National Park Service to build some elevated sidewalks:
